LIS becomes hosting provider for Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH

We welcome a prominent new addition to our recently completed computing center. From now on, we will also host the Transport Management System of Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH from Wolfsburg. We added two powerful servers to our new computing center especially for this order. The migration – which has now been successfully completed – went as planned and was executed with great precision within a single weekend.

“Data is the heart of every company, and its security and availability are elementary. The choice of a hosting provider is therefore of strategic importance. We are all the more pleased that Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH now relies on our company’s expertise in this area as well,” says our CEO Magnus Wagner.

Computing center increased by two servers

Just at the beginning of the year, we put a new computing center into operation at our headquarters in Greven. It has now been expanded by two servers especially for the order from the Wolfsburg-based logistics group. Our Head of Technology Johannes Willenberg comments: “Purchasing our own hardware for a single customer is rather unusual. But in this case, the volume of data made it unavoidable. The DMS database alone is three terabytes in size.” Since the beginning of April, the Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH data has been managed on two Lenovo SR650s, whose processors have a total of 48 physical cores and are each equipped with 512 gigabytes of RAM and eight terabytes of hard disk space. 40 virtual computers were installed on them to map the entire environment of Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH, including the foreign locations. Both the upload and the download take place via a redundantly designed one-gigabit line.

“The data transfer still took five hours,” Willenberg reports. And that’s without the logistics company’s three-terabyte document database. It was transferred via courier on a hard drive. “That was faster,” says Willenberg with a laugh.

Three months preparation

Willenberg and his team invested three months of preparation in the project. The tight time frame for the data migration required meticulous planning of all procedures and processes. Only 40 hours, from Saturday morning to Sunday evening, remained for our team for the implementation, in order to ensure uninterrupted work on the part of Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH. It turned out to be an advantage that the logistics company has been our customer since 2016 and uses almost all WinSped modules. “That’s why there were already many good connections at the technical level, which made the coordination much easier,” Willenberg reports. “In the end,  there was even enough time to additionally run version updates of WinSped.”

We now host the data sets of around 100 customers via our new computing center.
